虛雲大師禪聯

高証先生：

       雲公大師的禪聯，寥寥不過四十四字，譯成英文，竟然勞動我們三人心血。本刊《廣大和諧》美籍資深編輯丶加州聖地雅哥州立大學教授丶美國人文基金會詩人奨得主Sandra A. Wawrytko 博士也參與貢獻；贊成用主動語氣，保存原滋原味。你可轉報令師喜訊。

虛雲大師禪聯：

兩手將山河大地捏扁、搓圓、掐碎了，徧撒虛空，渾無色相。

一棒把千古業魔打死、救活、喚醒來，放入微塵，共作道場。

With both of my hands, I'll keep all forms of existence --such as the mountains, rivers and great earth -- pinched flat, rubbed round, crushed to pieces, and scattered all over the empty space beyond any physical forms.

With one swing of the club, I'll have the eternal devil of Karma beaten to death, restored to life, awakened, and transformed into dust specks as part of the Dharma-Awakening Site.

雲公的語言，直撲有力，如發獅子吼。華教授用語"transformed into...."稍嫌過文。僕將它改回您原來的用字"put",后靣緊跟的前置詞，则改用 "within…"(原想用"contained within...."的)。這是謹遵曾約農先生之教：＂短句能行，不用長句；短字能行，不用長字＂。

曾師的祖父曾紀澤，是慈禧派駐倫敦的大清公使，父親曾廣銓擔任參贊；故他六月留英，六歲半回國。時父廾任駐朝鮮公使，他則返鄉(湖南湘鄉)接受祖國教育十年。十七歲以優異成續考取清華首屈庚子賠款奨學金，再度留英六年，入倫敦大學冶礦系，習工程。他一生喜愛英國文學，羅素杜威訪湘，他任翻譯，二哲驚贊其英語道地。在台灣他曾擔任蔣夫人的英文顧問。
